General Admissions
Tradition sees the “Royal” colleges start the graduation ceremonies.
They are then followed by colleges in order of foundation date - from the oldest and finishing with the most recent.

So, Kings College (Henry VI), then Trinity College (Henry VIII) start proceedings and then St John’s.

The remarkable Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII, founded both Christs and St John’s but only John’s is seen as “Royal” with Christs missing out. 🤔
No one seems to know why.

The King’s Men perform a programme of madrigals, part-songs and close-harmony on the banks of the River Cam.

At the tour conclusion they presented me with a bag of New Zealand goodies but, the best bit, sang Pokarekare Ana, a traditional Māori love song.

The new Cavendish Science Laboratory is nearing completion.
A £300 million project assisted by a generous £75 million donation from the family of Ray Dolby, the sound innovator who studied at Pembroke College.
The first Cavendish was established in 1874.
In 1974 it moved to the Cavendish 2.
During those initial 100 years, modern science in Cambridge took off.
29 Nobel prize winning scientists worked there and their discoveries changed the world we live in.

This week,for 5 mornings , we hosted students from a school in Cagliari.
The aim was to improve their English,presentation skills and confidence.
What a wonderful bunch of bright, inquisitive,engaged,funny and polite young people.
Loads of educational stuff but we all had lots of fun too.
We decided their efforts should be rewarded with a surprise graduation ceremony.
Thanks to the generosity of Great St Mary’s church and Ryder & Aimes, who loaned the gowns,we delivered a moment they will always remember.
Thanks also to Marta and Camela, their enthusiastic teachers.

Tall shadows and a warm glow from the late afternoon sun.
The Wren is open to the public again and…free entry!
Weekdays from 12 noon until 2pm and between 10.30 and 12.30 on Saturdays (during term time)
It displays a fascinating collection of archive pieces, including Isaac Newton’s own copy of his Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica and Winnie the Pooh. 😀
It also hosts a statue of the romantic poet Lord Byron.

Apparently the corten steel blocks will weather over time to a warm rust colour.

Of course, the placement of a modern artwork in a college founded in 1441 has divided opinions.

I finally made time to visit the Spitting Image exhibition at the University Library.

The dialogue, puppets, history and making of the irreverent satirical puppet show created by local lads Roger Law (born in Littleport) and Cambridge born Peter Fluck.

Well worth a visit.😀
